ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Fals (Bronze, 12 mm, 2.27 g, 6 h), Arab-Byzantine type, struck under the authority of the first governor of North Africa, Ibn al-Numan, uncertain mint in North Africa, circa AH 76-80 = AD 695/6-699/700. Two imperial bust facing, both draped and wearing crowns; around, blundered, truncated and partly illegible 'Non est Deus nisi ipse solus cui socius non est' ('There is no God but he alone, he has no partner' in Latin). Rev. Transformed cross on three steps; around, blundered, truncated and partly illegible 'Deus dominus noster sapiens magnus eternus omnia noscens' (God our Lord, wise, great, eternal and all knowing' in Latin).
